Costa Rica is not the regional leader in low-cost living. Many items in large chain stores are nearly equivalent in cost to the price in the U.S.
That said, Costa Rica is an extremely good value in a range of specific areas.
Firstly, there are a variety of high quality foods that are grown and sold locally that can be had for good prices. If you like vegetables and fresh fruits, centering your purchases on locally grown produce can result in some very good deals.
Where Costa Rica really shows her advantage is in labor costs. With a legal minimum wage of minimum $1.96 per hour, help in the form of a gardener, driver, house-cleaner, or assistant is very affordable. Minimum wages include the payment to social security and government programs, so you can rest assured all is legal and above board. See our “Business Friendly” section for more information on the affordability of hiring business professionals such as accountants and attorneys.
